We live in a dynamic time, with technological advances happening at a dizzying pace. So, why do professionals still make typos in their correspondence?

I received an email where the client used “mixed” instead of “missed” and “or” instead of “out”. I had to read it twice to make sense of her communication. Utilize the tools available to us so that we can show up as our best selves when interacting with others. I like Grammarly, or check out this list of different options.

Speaking about tools, AI is already disrupting so many of our professions. How can we future-proof ourselves as generative AI becomes more prevalent?

This terrific article from Fast Company, “The 5 Soft Skills Needed to Succeed in an AI-Dominated Workplace,” articulates the skills that we should focus on to navigate and advance in this changing world.

1) Social Interaction: collaborating, listening, teamwork, self-awareness, and managing your emotions — the list goes on. Being able to work well with others is critical.

2) Creativity: The author emphasizes the importance of using creativity when creating AI prompts. While I agree with that point, becoming more creative overall has benefits beyond interfacing with AI.

3) Critical Thinking: While AI can analyze and synthesize vast amounts of data, critical thinking is uniquely human, and we need to sharpen this skill rather than being passive observers.

4) Curiosity: One of my favorite skills. Why? How? Ask questions, challenge assumptions, and push for alternatives. Do not assume or get lazy. Be curious.

5) Unbiased, Ethical Decision Making: The author, Heide Abelli, cautions, “the datasets that AI relies upon can mirror and further amplify societal biases, leading AI to make discriminatory and unfair judgments.” We need the human skill of unbiased, ethical decision-making.

And Finally...

Soft skills, such as emotional intelligence, matter and will become increasingly important in this AI-driven world. In reviewing a client’s EQ-i assessment, it was interesting to observe him digest the results, humbly acknowledge areas of strength and those in need of development, and become energized to create a plan to develop specific skills.

What are the soft skills that you need to sharpen – listening to learn, curiosity, empathy, resilience, conflict resolution, critical thinking, presentation skills, or becoming a more effective communicator? Be intentional and feel free to reach out if I can support you on your journey.

Have a great week,
